Tips for Living With Asthma
Posted on Saturday, August 28, 2010 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health

By Jacob Maslow

It is possible to be active and stay healthy, even when you're living with asthma. The key to living with asthma successfully is to keep it under control. Limit contact with asthma triggers by controlling your environment, monitor your condition with a peak flow meter, and follow your treatment plan strictly.

Develop goals that relate to your quality of life. Being able to measure your success gives you greater motivation to follow asthma plans consistently.

Develop an asthma plan with your doctor. The plan describes which medicines to take every day to help delay the long-term effects of asthma and the steps to treat asthma attacks. It helps you better control your asthma attacks by keeping you aware of symptoms and of how to make quick decisions about medicine and treatment. Emergency and doctor’s phone numbers should be included.

Keep an asthma diary of your meter readings and circumstances surrounding good and bad days so you can adjust accordingly. People often underestimate the severity of their symptoms. They may not notice symptoms until their lungs are functioning at 50% of their personal best measurement.

Take your medicines as your healthcare professional prescribes. It is important to keep track of the inhaler doses and discard the inhaler when you have used the number of doses indicated on the package labeling. This not only prevents you from having an empty inhaler, but it also prevents you from inhaling only propellant after the medicine has run out.

Reduce your dietary fat intake.  Researchers at the University of Newcastle in Australia have recently discovered a link between high fat foods and asthma inflammation.

Natural herbs, vitamins, and botanicals can help as well. For example, in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, asthma herbal medicine intervention has shown benefit to asthma sufferers in recent studies.  In a study of Japanese schoolchildren, vitamin D supplements taken during the winter and early spring helped prevent seasonal flu and asthma attacks.

In a recent study, there was a significantly greater improvement in the weekly number of asthma attacks, scores for drug treatment, and peak flow rate, in the group who practiced yoga. Deep abdominal breathing and massage therapy may help you breathe easier by increasing relaxation, and destroying a common trigger, stress.

If you are currently struggling with asthma symptoms, consider these tips; it just might make a big difference.

Lose Weight Like a Celebrity
Posted on Thursday, August 19, 2010 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health

Each new trend that surfaces across the planet ranging from fashion to health is mostly patterned or attributed to a celebrity. And one of the most celebrated things about the life of a “celebrity” is that healthy looking, seemingly ageless body they use to rock the red carpet come awards night.

So how do they do it? Healthy lifestyle is the key especially in the aspect of maintaining the right body weight. Trimming fats around the waist, sophisticated diet plans, extreme physical activities, and fitness trainers nevertheless, these are just some of their regimen. A complicated system isn’t it?

One question remains: “Can the average Joe pattern their weight loss plans from these celebrities and escape with a much lighter weight and slimmer waistline?”

There are thousands of research concerning weight loss and dieting. The problem is what suits the average Joe? Ordinary people don’t fit well in the realms of celebrity lifestyle. It’s is paramount for celebrities to consult every single professional, spend millions of dollars, and dwell in extensive amounts of rejuvenating activities because their job is to look good in front of the camera. Bottom line is, YOU can do it too in a simpler and more accommodating manner.

The average person needs to be healthy and look good also. It’s not an exception. So here is some advice for losing weight that can actually work for all people:

1.) Eat in moderation-. Overindulgence when it comes to eating food is the main culprit in weight gain.. According to Jane Harrison, a registered dietician and nutritionist, mini-meals or an eating pattern of having 4-6 small meals a day is enough to maintain blood sugar levels, thus, preventing food cravings that lead to additional consumed calories by controlling you appetite.

2.) Maintain physical activity- We all know that exercise is something we should do. A person doesn’t need a gym or a walk in the park to do this. One must manipulate their environment so that it benefits them a good amount of exercise. An office job doesn’t require you to sit all the time, walk around the desk at times if possible. Hollywood celebs may have bikini bodies and hard-rock abs but the main objective here is to sweat it out and not to instantly achieve that superb anatomy. Gradual increase in activity and endurance is the key. It’s a long painful process but we will ultimately get there. Also, take time to consider more rigorous activities if you do have a spare time. It provides more cardio and melt away calories faster.

3.) Choose Healthy Foods- Hollywood A-Listers are conscious about what they churn down every meal. Some celebrities have extreme diet/food plans made for them or transform themselves into vegetarians. The above-mentioned lifestyle is way too much for a regular person. However, it is very achievable. Handling one’s financial budget and knowledge of healthy eating could lead to a disciplined-pattern of healthy food selection. By this, one must bear in mind to minimize consumption of junk foods, fatty foods, carbonated drinks, chocolates, etc. Knowledge is power in this case. Knowing the right foods to eat and actually practicing it takes discipline and will power.

4.) Drink reasonably- It’s definitely a no-brainer that celebs party all the time but the more health-oriented ones always watch what they drink. Beer and most alcoholic drink contain empty calories that don’t give any kind of nutrition to the body; they almost certainly add up weight. So, act like a rock star when the partying out but remember to do it only occasionally. It’s is good to party once a week but grab only a few drinks and don’t get wasted.

5.) Treat Yourself- Celebrities always pamper themselves and so could you. Treating yourself with healthy meals all week is equally important to indulging yourself with your favorite food every once in a while.(at the end of the week perhaps). It gratifies your ego for a job well done and doesn’t deprive you psychologically, emotionally and physically from the finer things in life. Pig out a little. It’s healthy, it’s fun and best of all, it motivates you to shed those calories the next day.

From now on, you can live a celebrity lifestyle and loss weight at the same time. Stay fit and healthy!

How birds can fly so high?
Posted on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health

This is a guest-post by Christopher Govender (Diet and Nutrition TV)

How do birds manage to fly so high? How do they manage to fly across continents, in a matter of days? I put it down to seed power. Smart animals from parrots to people eat seeds. Every time I reach for my seed jar in my fridge, I smile as I remember big seedeaters, like the character Fox Mulder from the X-Files series and Ace Ventura Pet Detective. Seeds are rich in essential fats, minerals, vitamin E and protein.  All you need is a tablespoon a day for optimum health. I encourage all the athletes I work with to follow the tips I will share with you today. Here is my magic formula:

My Daily Seed Jar

What you will need

500g of flax seeds (also called linseeds)

150g of pumpkin seeds

150g of sesame seeds

150g of sunflower seeds

A mixing bowl

A glass jar with a tight seal

1. In your mixing bowl, mix the flax seeds, which are rich in omega 3 with the pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds, which are rich in omega 6.

2. Pour the seed mix into the glass jar.

3. Keep the jar tightly sealed in your fridge until you use it.

4. Put a tablespoon in your coffee grinder, grind them up and add them to a soup, salad or cereal.

Important tips to remember

a. The best seeds are flax, hemp, pumpkin, sesame and sunflower. You get more goodness from them by grinding them first and sprinkling them on cereal, salads and soups.

b. Use cold-pressed seed oils for salad dressings, in pasta dishes and on steamed or raw vegetables. The best and most flavorsome are pumpkin and sesame.

c. Use pumpkin seed butter as a spread, instead of butter, mayonnaise or margarine.

I always find it exciting to whip up a batch of pumpkin seed butter. You are welcome to try out this recipe:

My pumpkin seed butter

What you will need:

Two cups of raw shelled pumpkin seeds

Six tablespoons of pumpkin seed oil

Four tablespoons of maple syrup

A quarter teaspoon of allspice

A quarter teaspoon of salt

Lightly roast the pumpkin seeds in the oven at no more than 160 degrees Fahrenheit for no longer than 20 minutes. Take them out and let them cool completely.

Pour the seeds into a blender and grind them into a fine powder. Then add the rest of the ingredients. Blend it all until you get a smooth paste. The longer you blend it the smoother it will become.

Pumpkin seeds are quite dry with less oil than nuts, so the butter will be drier than what you are use to, but using pumpkin seed oil has produced me the creamiest (and healthiest) results. Do not refrigerate your pumpkin seed butter; instead put it into a butter holder and place it next to your bread bin.

So there you have it - the secret to how birds can fly so high and across continents. Get yourself some seed power today.

Yours in health and peak performance,

Christopher Govender (Diet and Nutrition TV) http://dietandnutritiontv.com

Belly Fat and Crunches Do Not Mix
Posted on Tuesday, June 01, 2010 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Exercise

People develop belly fat for a number of different reasons. Some people have belly fat because of their genetic predisposition to store extra calories as body fat in the abdominal area. Others develop belly fat because they consume too many simple carbohydrates. It does not really matter why we have belly fat, what matters is what we do to lose it.

I am not sure how this got started, but there seems to be a pretty strong belief out there that the most effective exercise to lose belly fat is an abdominal crunch. Is it true? The short answer is no, it is not true. An even bigger question, however, is this: Do you need any kind of exercise to lose belly fat? The short answer to this question is also no, but first let's go over why you do not need to do abdominal crunches to lose belly fat.

The reason for this is simple: It does not really matter how many crunches you can do and how often you do them, the reason why abdominal crunches are useless has to do with the fact that they do not burn a lot of calories. Compared to other muscle groups, abdominal muscles are pretty small, and because of that they do not burn a lot of calories.

Doing barbell squats and deadlifts, on the other hand, engages large muscle groups, which burns a lot of calories. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but if you want to have great abs, you need to focus on exercises that work your abdominals indirectly. In other words, forget about doing crunches and focus on multi-joint, compound movements that involve large muscle groups.

Of course, one might argue that you do not need to exercise at all to lose belly fat. Huh? Yes, it sounds rather peculiar, but it is true. Since you cannot spot-reduce belly fat with exercise, your diet is actually more important than any exercise program you can come up with. Why? Because it is much easier to reduce your daily calorie consumption by controlling how much you eat than by trying to burn a certain number of calories with exercise.

You can only lose belly fat when you lose your overall weight, which means that losing belly fat really means just losing weight. When you lose weight, your overall body fat percentage decreases, and when that happens, the amount of belly fat goes down as well. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that following a great exercise program does not have any benefits. Exercise is very important for your overall health; it is just when it comes to losing belly fat, it is more important to pay a very close attention to your daily calorie intake and the composition of your diet.

Tips To Detox Your Body Naturally
Posted on Thursday, May 20, 2010 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health

Almost everybody needs to detox so that their bodies can function well.  Detoxification means blood cleansing through eliminating impurities from the blood in the liver, through kidneys, lungs, intestines, lymph, and skin.

The body has its own natural way of detoxification, but if the toxins are too much, it needs some help. Eating a congested diet with higher fats, refined foods, dairy products, and even taking drugs can create a build-up of toxins in the body.  That is why detoxification of the body is needed on a regular basis.

Here are a few tips to help detox your body naturally:

Eat a Proper Diet.  If you lack energy, you probably need a diet that is rich in protein and nutrients. Mineral deficiencies, fatigue, and low functions of organs should have a much supportive diet.

If you feel congested due to travel, stress, and eating different foods, you should try drinking juices or eating lightly for a few days.  You could also eat low protein foods, carbohydrates, and vegetarian meals. Mild detox can consist of vegetable meals which add proteins in your body. Fresh fish with vegetables can also provide the energy your body needs.

Take natural herb supplements. There are certain body organs which are prone to accumulating a high level of toxins. One of them is your colon.  Also, remember that the large intestine can become very toxic.  There are many detox programs that have come about to solve this problem. Fiber supplements are now available for cleaning and toning colons.

Exercise on a regular basis.  When you sweat during exercise, it gets rid of toxic wastes through your skin.  Regular exercise also improves your metabolism and helps in your overall detoxification.  However, exercise can also increase toxic productions in your body, so it must always be accompanied with antioxidants, adequate fluids, and vitamins.

Get a massage.  A nice massage stimulates body functions and creates a more relaxed feeling that eliminates worries, tensions, and mental stresses.

Recharge and get plenty of rest.  This is important in the rejuvenation process.  When you rest, your body and mind are in a more balanced state, which aids in natural detoxification.  Practicing yoga is a powerful exercise for breathing regulation and awareness, helping you to obtain a more balanced and active aura.

Eliminating toxins in a natural way is very important to the health of a person. Although the body can handle a certain amount of toxins, it is always good to think of reduction or elimination in case of excess toxin production and food intake.  In the end you will be benefited with a well-working and stronger immune system to prevent diseases from attacking you. In this way, you will live a much healthier life.

How to get rid of cellulite on your legs
Posted on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Exercise

First moves and a warm-up

Calling cellulite nasty would be an understatement. Cellulite arouses a lesser than pretty look, resulting in an awkward appearance and erasing it is tough, though not impossible. That way, exercises are more effective than miracle creams and lotions; however, there are certain ones that prove most effective than others. The simple reason being, they also eradicate the concentrated toxins from under skin, a process that’s also influenced by proper dietary habits.

Exercises to reduce cellulite start with the two feet together and then moving out forward gaining a lurched position. The floor is then touched with opposite hands and a rearward movement to return to the starting position. The legs are switched and the process repeated. 10 reps, 3 sets and this warm-up paves the way towards a visible change.

Leg exercises for cellulite

Climbing the staircase: Moving up and down the staircase is a complete exercise to the leg muscles. However, hurrying the process is going to make the muscles lose out on the stress, so care must be taken that the thigh and calf muscles get tired. This is possible when the movement is slow and without any break; best results are obtained from staircases with steps 12 to 15 inches high. The staircase can also be used alternatively; left foot is kept on the ground while the right on the step and the whole leg is straightened to lift the body up and then put down. The legs shift after every 10 or 15 reps.

Stretching: This must follow immediately after the staircase cellulite treatment. One of the legs is drawn straight backwards with the toe touching the floor and raised slowly, held and then brought down. This is to be repeated for at least 10 times, the legs then switch.

Leg Raises 1:This one is done lying sidewise, with one knee bent and the other leg out stretched and reposed against the opposite arm and elbow. The straightened leg and the opposite arm now move towards and then away from each other.

Leg Raises 2:
This requires the legs to be straight and moved up and down while squeezing the buttocks with every lift for ten times a leg.

Try Yoga For A Great Total Body Workout
Posted on Sunday, April 04, 2010 :: 3 Comments :: Article Rating :: Exercise

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to attend my wife’s Yoga class at the local gym.  I rediscovered something that I had forgotten.  Yoga is hard.  Very hard.  And its not just hard because of the stretching.

How Yoga Will Give You A Great Workout

It was Good Friday, so my wife and I had the day off together, and she had to teach a yoga class before we could get our day started.  With that in mind, we decided to go to the gym together, and head out from there.  Me, being the big strong man, thought I might take part of her class for the stretching before I went out to get my “real” workout started with the free weights.

I should’ve known better.  I’ve taken her class before.

Most guys I’ve known, myself included, tend to think of yoga as not very “manly.”  Taking her class helped remind me that yoga is not for cupcakes.  In fact, a well constructed yoga class will provide a great total body workout.  Here’s how.

1.  Yoga challenges your flexibility.
This is how we classically think about yoga, and it’s a correct perception.  Yoga challenges us to lengthen the muscle, which in turns builds strength and protects against injury.  We should all pay more attention to this subject, but as we age, it becomes even more important.

2.  Yoga builds strength in the core
Most of us know that our “core” muscles provide the foundation for both exercises and everyday function.  These are the muscles in the center of the body that are responsible for supporting posture, and provide the foundation every exercise in your arsenal.  A perfect example is the “Plank” which is finding more acceptance among strength trainers as a replacement to classic situps and crunches.

3.  Yoga provides a great body weight exercise.
The strength poses rely solely on body weight, but don’t let that fool you.  Anyone who’s spent much time trying to do pull-ups knows that body weight exercises can provide a workout to challenge even the strongest among us.  Combine that with the slow movements inherent to yoga, and you can expect to feel it when you’re done.

4.  Yoga builds balance.
Improving your balance reduces the risk of injury, and enhances practical strength.  All are important aspects of maintaining function and mobility, particularly if your job requires sitting at a desk all day long.

So, the next time you walk into a gym, and see a group of people flowing between yoga poses, don’t dismiss the idea of giving it a shot.  You might just be surprised at just how challenging it can be.

How to lose stubborn belly fat fast
Posted on Saturday, February 27, 2010 :: 1 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health, Exercise

Losing weight can be a daunting task. Luckily, your determination is all that it takes to pull it off. How much weight you lose in a certain period of time really depends on how much you exercise, and what you are eating. It is important to remember that losing too much weight at once is actually very bad for you. However, when starting a new health program, belly fat is the first to go. So that is how to lose belly fat fast!

Develop a new diet that works for you. You know all those unhealthy foods you eat. It's the first step, if not the hardest. It may be further complicated by the fact that your family may also eat unhealthy. So get them all involved! Make their lives happier, if that is the case. Tell them that you are all eating healthy from now on, if you have to. They will thank you for it later!

Just eat healthy foods, pay attention to what it says on the nutrition facts. Salt (sodium), sugar (fructose, glucose, anything that rhymes with “gross”), and high calories are some things you want to avoid. Eat plenty of vegetables, and salads. Use oil and vinegar for salad dressing instead of unhealthy dressing. Get recipe books for healthy eating. There are even cookbooks made for specific diets, so find the one that is right. Consult a professional doctor or nutritionist if you need to. And drink your required amount of water every day!

Adding the correct work out routine is also very important. It is the next step, and is also vital to your weight loss. Follow any routine you know or learn a new one. Join your local gym or training program. There are many things like that all over the place. If you visited a nutritionist, ask them what training program you should do, if they haven't told you already. There is always help if you know where to look.

The last thing you want to remember is that whatever you do, in order to keep the weight off you will have to stick with it. That means, losing 30 pounds and quitting eating healthy and exercising will cause you to gain that weight back, fast. So you have to keep up with your program. It will become second nature after a while. Just imagine the shape you will be in! So what are you waiting for?

Declutter Your Life By One Item Per Day
Posted on Monday, February 08, 2010 :: 1 Comments :: Article Rating :: Self Improvement

Just so we are clear, you can do this. Actually I’m pretty sure that the majority of people in the westernized world could. And what that is, is complete a one year challenge. The prize? Well, I can only speak for myself, but it was worth it. The Challenge? That’s where things get interesting.

I’m not to sure where I came up with the idea. It was probably in one of the last 4 moves I did in two years. I vowed on the last one that the countless boxes I was hauling around containing all my worldly possessions could use a little diet. Actually, that wasn’t my first thought. It was more along the lines of, “I wonder how much small storage would cost?” Then the absurdity of that statement struck home when I actually looked in those very boxes I considered paying to store these items.

Like many, I define myself by my possessions. Not entirely, but I will admit they play a part in who I am. I don’t consider myself especially materialistic, but it seems that over my 27 years on this planet that I had been accumulating more than shedding. It’s those types of things that begin to fill up closets, drawers and collect dust on shelves. It’s gifts that you feel guilty about throwing out but have absolutely no intention of using (I’m looking at you George Foreman Grill). It’s the shirt that is clearly out of fashion, but you did spend $60 on. It’s the electronics that you upgraded, but still feel compelled to keep, just in case the other one quits. The list is endless as are the reasons. But in the end, it’s clutter, and not just physically, but in the mind as well.

Okay, you’ve been patient enough. Let me explain what the challenge was. I vowed that everyday I was going to get rid of exactly one thing. That’s it. Beauty in simplicity. What I didn’t appreciate was the effect it would have on my life.

6 Surefire Ways to Get Better Sleep
Posted on Tuesday, September 01, 2009 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health, Power Nap

Having a little trouble getting enough zzz’s? It’s not uncommon for adults to go through periods of insomnia at several different times during their lifetime. Lack of sleep causes difficulty concentrating, exhaustion and a general feeling of discomfort. In extremes, lack of sleep can also be dangerous – causing car and work accidents. But, luckily, there are ways to get your sleep back on track – often without resorting to over the counter or prescription drugs.

Here are six tricks you can try to help you get back to getting a good night’s sleep.

Keep a regular schedule

Waking and going to bed at the same time each day can help keep your body in a rhythm that can improve your sleep habits. By going to bed and waking at the same time each day, you’re teaching your body when its time to sleep.

Eliminate distractions from the bedroom.

Most sleep experts recommend that the bedroom be used for sleeping and lovemaking only. Activities like reading and watching television in bed actually prevent your body from becoming ready for sleep when you get into bed.

Watch what – and when- you eat

Eating heavy meals too close to bedtime can interrupt sleep. If you stop eating 3 hours before going to bed, you’ll improve your sleep – and likely your waistline too, since you’ll give your body more time to burn off calories before going to sleep. In addition, avoid spicy foods in the evening as they may cause stomach discomfort or heartburn at bedtime. In addition, avoid caffeinated drinks in the evening, as they may cause lack of sleep. Alcohol has a similar effect on some people.

Make the room comfortable

Too many lights in and around the bedroom can cause difficulty sleeping. Investing in some blackout shades might be in order. Keep your room at a comfortable temperature for sleeping. For most people, this is a little cooler than the normal waking temperature. Being too hot can cause fitful sleep. In addition, make certain you’re sleeping on a supportive, yet comfortable mattress, and using comfortable pillows.

Why Are Eye Exams Important
Posted on Thursday, May 21, 2009 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health

If you think that undergoing eye exams are only for those who believe they need glasses, then, think again. Eye exams are not designed just to prescribe eye glasses or contact lenses . These exams exist to monitor your vision. It's something that people usually neglect but must be considered by every person who knows how to take care of his or her body parts.

So, what do eye exams do? Aside from the fact that it is needed when an eye doctor will check your eye vision if it needs correction, eye exams are also given to check for other eye diseases. Also, as you know, your eyes can be an indicator of other diseases concerning the different parts of your body, so the eye specialist checks for your overall health with eye exams.

So, what do eye doctors usually check for when they conduct eye exams to patients? One thing that is possible to be diagnosed is Amblyopia. Amblyopia is a condition of the eyes where one is turned on or has a different vision than the other eye. Through eye exams, the eye doctor can check for possible correction to this such as patching the other eye for some time.

Another thing that can be checked during eye exams is the possible refraction of the eye. Of course, this means the eyes can either be nearsighted, farsighted, or astigmatic. When diagnosed during eye exams, the patient is prescribed to take eyeglasses or contact lenses with the proper correction of vision.

Strabismus is another condition of the eye that may be checked in eye exams. The eye specialist will check the alignment of your eyes. If they are working together and are properly aligned, there is no problem. If they are not properly working, you have to undergo eye treatments to correct the eye's alignment.

Other diseases can be diagnosed through eye exams. Glaucoma and diabetic eye disease are some of the more popular eye diseases. By checking the eye's blood vessels or retina, overall health condition of the eye can be checked. This is important because these two diseases do not show symptoms when the person's eyes are attacked.
Usually, eye exams are not taken to correct an eye disease but to actually prevent having eye disorders. As what doctors always say, prevention is better than cure. You are encouraged to take eye exams at least once or twice a year.

There are many headache types. The main types of headache are the simple tension headache, which is the most common, a migraine with aura or without aura and cumulative headache. Each of these headache types has different causes and treatment. It is good to be able to identify the type of headache you may be experiencing so that you seek the proper treatment.

The headache is very common for everyone, but few are those seeking medical help. Usually they take a painkiller and give place to the pain. But this is the worst and most common response after speculation that this is something that often happens to everyone.

The headache is one of the most serious health problems that needs professional help and assistance and that is why they have created in most public hospitals and private clinics special sections called "headache centres".

The consequences of such a situation, especially when it is chronic or prolonged, although it may not have a serious impact on our health, but can change so much the quality of our life. It certainly worth’s to devote some of our time to prevent or provide treatment for the headaches. Especially if we can deal with it in simple ways, just knowing what may have caused the headache and try to avoid it, and then to go to the doctor for further investigation.

Because headache has a direct impact on the vessels and nerves of the brain, any damage to surrounding areas that support our head, i.e. the face, the neck, the vertebral column, or in connection with the nervous system, muscular or circulatory system (pressure) can cause headaches. Thus, depending on the area or body function there are different headache types.

The different headache Types

Headache Types #1: The migraine headaches

This is the «female headache» since in this case the female hormones are the major cause (shown mainly in the menstruation) and is second in frequency. The first episodes of migraine are occurring in childhood or adolescence and can be characterized as hereditary headache, because 70% of patients mention that one of their parents is also suffering from migraines.

In this case there are two sub-types of Headache: the migraine with aura and without.

Migraine with aura or classic migraine

This headache types gives warning signs starting about an hour before the crisis. These may be visual disturbances such as flashes, difficulty in speaking and some minor hallucinations.

Migraine without aura or common migraine

How to get rid of work stress
Posted on Friday, April 17, 2009 :: 1 Comments :: Article Rating :: Productivity, Manage Stress, Manage Time

Today's work conditions create more feelings of anxiety, tension or pressure, and as a result there is low productivity, reduced income, professional stagnation or even dismissal. According to surveys, 80% of stress is due to conditions prevailing in the workplace. To deal with stress and be able to achieve what you want in your career you should consider the advice of specialists regarding ways to manage stress. First you must determine whether you are stressed and then find the cause of stress. As regards the sources of stress in the workplace, these are varied. Some relate to the role of the employee, others are specific to certain professions and others are related to working conditions.

The poor working conditions, such as non-protective measures for workers or overtime not paid, are the most common causes of stress. The pressure on the deadlines is another factor that can cause stress to the employees. A list of potential sources of stress that may be experienced by employees is as follows:

High degree of accountability
Lack of promotions
Receiving promotions
Non-participation in decision-making
Uncertainty regarding their position
Problems with colleagues, superiors, or subordinates
Feeling that their work is not recognized or appreciated
Constant changes
No clear idea of their responsibilities
Working environment, with strict and rigid rules.

After the stress diagnostic factors i.e. if you notice that you feel stress because of your work, you should follow techniques to solve the problem. Some tips to cope with stress, according to psychologists, are:

Find what is causing you stress in your environment and observe your emotional and physical reactions. Do not ignore the problem in the hope that it will pass. Most times it gets worse.

Identify what you can change. If you cannot change your environment or to reduce stress, take care of yourself, make breaks more often, exercise, watch your diet.

Reduce the intensity of your emotional reactions. Do not try to please everyone around you. Put priorities, all the things with which you deal are not urgent. Try to see the positive side of things and not always the negative.

Use relaxation techniques and meditation to reduce tension in the muscles and breathing to help restore the normal pace. Even 10 minutes a day helps considerably in reducing physical symptoms of anxiety.

Avoid alcohol, smoking and large amounts of caffeine, because they tend to increase any physical symptoms of stress. It is important to sleep well and not disrupt the program of your sleep.

Develop friendships and relationships that support you mentally.

Also a very effective way to self manage stress is the proper use of time and your career. You must properly manage your time not only to avoid stress because you do no have enough time to finish your work, but also because, as the famous saying says, time is money. A useful guide on how to properly use your time is the following:

1. Your time schedule should be a decision making tool.

2. Your time schedule should be flexible.

3. Your time schedule should make efficient use of resources.

4. Your time schedule should have clear targets.

5. Your time schedule should clearly define priorities.

6. Your time schedule should not be over scheduled

7. You should continuously review your time schedule

When you set targets it is good to write them in a piece of paper and clearly define what is urgent, what is important and what is not, in order to determine what ahs priority. The registration of your goals may be in the following format:

As regards the time management you should consider the situations in your work in which you loose unnecessary time, precious minutes and how you can save this time. Visitors are one reason that several times forcing you to stop your work. You can deal with them by closing the door of your office, avoiding discussions that do not lead anywhere. In this case you must acquire modern equipment, to keep notes while you speak, and be prepared to tell the most important when asked. You can also loose valuable time from the lack of organization of your office. So discard the unnecessary paperwork, write to the organizer about your business or even better on a schedule that exists on computers. Leave on your office only the current work and arrange the office space by placing relevant documents and tools in the same position each time.

Generally you should know that all these solutions would perform better if you have the opinion of a professional career advisor or psychologist, because for each person the conditions of work are unique. Of course, if none of the above measures does not help reduce workplace stress, you may need to follow more drastic solutions, such as the search for job that is more satisfying. Remember that to grumble about your job and your boss constantly is equally futile to silently tolerate a situation that erodes your health and your career.

6 Major causes of daily headaches
Posted on Monday, April 06, 2009 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health, Manage Stress

If you have a headache for more than ten or fifteen days a month, the problem falls under the category of chronic daily Headaches. This term is not a medical diagnosis but a descriptive term, since many types of headache can lead to chronic daily headaches.

Such frequent headaches require careful assessment by a specialist doctor in headaches, both to determine the headache causes, and suggest ways for the headache treatment. Whether the patient should do the diagnostic tests, this will be decided by the doctor (specialised in daily headaches), based on the clinical history and neurological examination. If the neurological examination is normal and has ruled out the existence of an underlying cause (for example, a cancer), then probably the daily headaches are due to one of the following six reasons:

1. Abuse of headache drugs
2. Chronic migraines
3. Chronic tension headache
4. Recent beginning of daily headaches
5. Cumulative headache
6. Continuous unilateral headache

See below a brief description of each of the situations that can cause daily headaches for more than ten or fifteen times a month.

1. Abuse of headache drugs

The abuse of headache drugs is a frequent cause of chronic daily headaches. This can occur in people with migraine or tension-type headache. Usually, these are people who have migraine or tension headaches for many years and, over the years, the headache crises gradually become more frequent and more powerful, and patients are receiving more and more drugs. Gradually, the headaches can occur daily, and are accompanied by the daily use of medicines. Increased use of drugs makes the headache most resistant and thus perpetuating the situation, leading to ever-greater use of medication and to frequent daily headaches. It should be noted that it is not to blame a particular medicine, but that chronic daily headaches due to drug abuse may occur with any medicine, from the simplest (eg paracetamol) to the most modern (eg triptanes). It appears that what's wrong is the misuse of drugs and the lack of limits on their use. In general, every person who takes any medicine for headaches in a dose over 10-15 pills a month, possibly he/she is making drug abuse and it is faced with the risk to switch gradually to chronic daily headaches.

Treatment of chronic daily headaches with daily drug abuse requires complex preventive therapy (at least two drugs) and is quite difficult because many patients initially improve but then relapse.

2. Chronic migraine headaches

While for most medical conditions, the term «chronic» means that the condition existed for many years, for migraine headaches the condition «chronic» means that the migraine occurs very frequently, more than 15 days a month. There are not many people who suffer from chronic daily migraine headaches. Most people with migraine headaches have only occasional crises, usually from 1 to 3 times a month or less. In some people, however, the migraine crisis may gradually become very common, and may even develop into a situation where the patient is experiencing 15 daily headaches per month or more to gradually become chronic migraine headaches. Chronic migraines may lose the typical characteristics of migraine and the headache is continuous or nearly continuous, without apparent intolerance to light and noise, without nausea and vomiting. People with chronic daily migraines are really suffering; they are constantly in a state of suffering and feel powerless. Chronic migraines require preventive treatment.

exercises-to-improve-your-memory

The ability to remember things for a short or long time is crucial in order to be able to carry out the various activities of daily life. Our memory permeates throughout our lives. Without memory learning would be impossible, the past would be non-existent, the future would be uncertain. The good news is that there are ways on how to improve your memory through certain exercises and techniques, which you can use on a daily basis with out taking much of your time.

The loss of memory and cognitive functions, affects mainly those who do not exercise their memory and do not use their minds. The example of the great musician Xermpert von Karagian perhaps is no coincidence. He lost his father and grandfather due to Altschaimer disease. Because he feared that he would also suffer from Altschaimer disease he started to train his mind on various learning exercises. At 65 he learned to fly an airplane. Finally, he died 80 years with absolute clarity!

Why we forget things?

Often we forget things because we do not give adequate attention to them or because we are concerned with another event, or even because we were unable to digest new information during a period we have stress or when we are emotionally charged because of an unexpectedly sad event. There are many things that affect and damage our memory, which we need to watch out for:

Stress

The stress is bad adviser for memory. The most striking example is that of students, who can study perfectly but when it comes to exams they cannot remember anything. Their mind is somehow blocked and unable to recall what they memorized. Exam stress is bad for the memory and needs a special way to manage stress.

Manage your weight with easy steps

manage your weight
by taketime111

One of the most common problems people face in the modern way of living is how to manage their weight. The demanding and fast rhythms of life make people forget about their weight, diet and health and as a result they either become overweight or are bound to unhealthy eating habits. To manage your weight you need to have a basic understanding of how our body works (in terms of fat and nutrients) and you also need to have persistence and patience because managing your weight is a process that takes time and needs a lot of effort. This article explains what you need to know about fats and gives some easy to follow tips to manage your weight faster and better.

Some basic but yet very important weight management calculations

Based on what experts say our body «burns» without extra exercise or vigorous activity, generally 30 calories per kilogram of active weight. Thus you can find out how many calories a day are needed to maintain your existing weight. But if you want to lose 1 kilo per week you should reduce them by 500 calories a day. But attention! The active weight is what is left from the body weight, if we remove the kilos of fat we have. The active weight is that which is actively involved in the "burning process" of the body and not our total weight.

To find the active weight we divide our total weight (e.g.80 kg) with our height multiplied by 2 (e.g. 1.62 cm), i.e.: 80 / (1.62 X1, 62) = 30.48. This number represents the percentage of fat in our body. In this example, the fat body is 80 X 30, 48% = 24 kg, so the active weight is 80-24 = 56 kg and the daily calories must be 56 X 30 = 1680. To lose 1 kilo per week we need 1680-500 = 1180 calories daily.

Its time to start manage your weight and health

How to tell if someone is lying

how to tell if someone is lying?
by confusionists

Being able to understand when someone is lying can really help your manage your life better. Think about it for a while...wouldn't be nice if you could easily understand when someone tells you a lie? Are you living an intense live where you talk to many people and you have a sense that some of them tell lies but you do not know whom? The answer is simpler than you think...Look at the movements of the person talking to you, look at their eyes and their smile. Why? But because ... body language never tells lies!

Why people lie is an old philosophical question that goes beyond our current scope! However, we have all experienced situations where we listen to someone talking and although the words seem entirely reasonable and real, there is «something» that tells us that the person is not telling the truth. And this «something» is a message from our brains that wants to protect us, as it is able to «scan» everything we see, decode the signals and act accordingly!

People interact with two main ways: with words and body language. Sometimes one of the two ways dominates the other, but usually they are combined at the same time. So we take brain signals that create meanings of words, thoughts, conclusions and signals from the body language (visual, hearing, smell and touch), which create confirmations, suspicious, energy flow (negative or positive), confidence or doubt. When the two languages, verbal and body, are not contradictory, meaning that what we say is also reflected in our body, we have effective communication and completeness and we accept the other message as true. But what happens when there is a contradiction between what we say and the way we say it? if we take into account that there are around 1 million marks of body language, you can understand that we are talking about a huge alphabet and a huge source of information. The more you exercise in observing body language the deeper you will be able to understand these codes, and the safer will be the conclusions. Sometimes you may have to combine 2 or 3 small body signals to make a safer conclusion.

What causes stress in modern life

causes-of-stress-in-modern-life
causes of stress in modern life by raylopez

Modern life is creating stress and we all react the same way. We see the effects in our bodies, our pulses are increased, and we feel the tension in our muscles. The causes of stress in modern life emerge from the too many obligations we have to handle everyday to the modern way of negative thinking.

We have all experienced stress periods in our life. This is something normal. Indeed, in small levels stress can be constructive! When, however, is a problem?

Is this a period in your life that you have many outstanding obligations; Do you worry about the future? Do you experience problems at home or at work? Do you work a lot and you are not resting enough? Do you feel trapped in situations that you cannot change? If the answer is «yes», even for a single question, be careful because you may engage in the vicious cycle of stress, which weakens the immune system and is the cause of many psychological and physical disorders.

The mechanism of stress

Stress triggers a whole mechanism that gives us the ability to be physically ready to face a risk or run away. During this reaction specific hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released, thereby increasing the heartbeat, slow down digestion, increase the flow of blood in most muscle groups and many other functions of the autonomous nervous system change, giving the body more energy and strength. When the alleged threat is subsided, the organism is designed to return to its normal state. In modern life, however, stressful stimuli are continuous and stress is daily, so the body cannot relax, the pressure builds up and eventually causes damage to the body.

understand-and-manage-stress
manage stress by relaxing by eltercero

With the exception perhaps of Buddhist monks, stress is in our lives, to a lesser or greater extent. Managing stress means to be in position to understand the factors that can cause you stress and be able to minimize them or even better eliminate them completely. This is a difficult process and not all people can successfully manage to control their stress levels. The very first step in the process to manage stress is to understand what actually is stress. With the term stress we mean all the physiological changes that occur in humans when threatened or endangered by a stimulus or a situation. Therefore, any stimulus that can cause stress is known as a stress factor. Anxiety on the other hand, is nothing other than the feeling of fear and tension born in us when we face a new, provocative or dangerous situation (i.e. when we are in a state of stress). Stress is not necessarily something negative. In small levels it can be the driving force behind us. The desirable is that in the morning stress should be low, then rising during the day and at the evening to close at the low levels found in the morning.

The current pace of life is more intense and the ever-increasing demands force most of us to wake, sleep and live with stress, leaving no time to rest either the spirit or our body. Thus, even in conditions that there is no stress, we are still in a situation of constant muscle tension, which gradually became our way of living. The symptoms of intense stress occur at four levels:

  • Feelings (distressed, irritability, restlessness)
  • Mind (negative, destructive and irrational thoughts)
  • Behaviour (indecision, excessive demands on others, loss of humour)
  • Body (headaches, abdominal pain, grit, sweating)

benefits of exercise by charcoalartist

The benefits of exercise are very well known to all. Scientists and researchers all over the word do not cease to repeat it at every opportunity. One study after another shows the beneficial effects of exercise to our mind and body.

Exercise helps us lose weight, eliminate and manage stress, stimulates the immune system and reduces the risk of certain diseases. There are many forms of exercise. These can be classified into two main categories, the aerobics and anaerobic exercises. In particular, the aerobic exercise refers to any low-intensity activity that increases the oxygen that we take and the heartbeat while the high-intensity physical activity is called anaerobic exercise (e.g. body building).

Aerobic exercise include various sports such as martial arts (which combine and anaerobic exercise), running, walking, cycling, swimming, skiing and, of course, indoor aerobic exercises.

The body needs a certain amount of energy to maintain some basic functions such as breathing, blood circulation and for the functioning of the different body organs. The energy maintain in these functions is known as calm or basic metabolic rate. Any activity in addition to those basic functions requires additional energy, which is taken by the glycogen (carbohydrates) and deposits of fat in the blood, liver and muscles.

The energy source, glycogen or fat-consumed, during exercise depends on the intensity and duration of exercise. The higher the intensity of exercise the more the body relies on glycogen. The lower the intensity of the exercise the more the body relies on the fat reserves.

The power nap for many people is a pleasure and also a need. But often there is no time for such a luxury.

Many people feel bad and stressed when they take a power nap in the afternoon while others work. It has spread the impression that a power nap is a sign of laziness and also that it prevents good sleep and creates insomnia during the night.

A series of data obtained in recent years show that people have a biological need to power nap in the middle of the day. As the human body needs sleep at night it also needs sleep during the day.

A power nap has no adverse effects on the duration and quality of sleep. In short the human brain, is somehow biologically programmed for both sleep periods without any negative interaction.

The biological need for a power nap, when met, has beneficial effects among both the young and elderly.

Chronic sleep loss leads to attention problems, concentration problems, data processing speed problems, short-term memory and decision-making problems. Indeed, the chronic sleep deprivation is a risk factor for developing obesity and diabetes.

by michaelmarlatt

Do you sometimes forget things? Birthdays, names, dates? Surely you are not alone and the good news is that there are easy ways to improve your memory

The memory capacity varies greatly from person to person, regardless of age. However, there are some factors that affect these skills: hypertension, insomnia, excessive alcohol consumption, thyroid problems, depression, or merely the absence of stimuli, all this reduce the performance of our memory. The same happens if you get too much information. The flow of information today is frightening and the loaded mind has low absorption.

Another factor affecting memory is stress. The stress hormones neutralize the transporting glucose molecules in hippocampus and leave the brain with low energy. If the stress is chronic, the same hormones act as acid, which passes through the neurons, leading to the reduction of hippocampus. If this trend is continuous, can destroy the neurons of hippocampus. Good sleep, stress control, physical exercise and the proper maintenance of the arteries and circulatory system will certainly help to improve memory.

manage your time better

The ability to manage our time efficiently is of great importance for happiness in our lives. Success in this critical area will allow us to enjoy the pleasures that life offers, will help us to manage stress and is a big step for our mental relaxation and calm.

Conversely, if we do not learn the basic principles of time management, the setting of objectives and priorities, we risk being caught up by the waves and storms of life that affect us too often.

Good time management is not easy. Not all people have the gift of proper organization. Many people have a wealth of activities and obligations. They feel they are oppressed by the many jobs that have to do with respect to the family, home or their profession. Easily, without the skills and education, one can be caught in a vicious cycle of time disruption and priorities with extremely negative consequences.

Despite the importance to manage time efficiently, educational systems at all levels give very little education to young people. This is a paradox if someone considers that the management of time is an essential component of success in all business sectors.

Manage your time means to be in position to dominate the time and your work rather than being dominated by them. Your time is your life. Every thought and every action you make takes time. Therefore the way you use your time automatically determines where and how to use your life. The great paradox is that nobody has enough time, and yet everyone has as long as there is. Many of the time consuming factors affecting people cause stress and anxiety, so these factors must be identified and limited.

It is very important to manage your time successfully because:

  • If you have more time for work you have more chances for success.
  • If you have more time to think you can utilize your mind better.
  • If you have more time to play, you can enjoy your life better.
  • If you have more time to read, you can gain more knowledge.
  • If you have more time for being friendly, the happier you will be.
  • If you have more time to love, you will feel more joy.
  • If you have more time to enjoy, the better is for your health and soul.

Do not forget Murphy’s law:" Nothing is as easy as it seems. Anything to be done needs more time than you think and if something can go wrong, it will go wrong. "

positive thinking is the key to your success

Thinking positive is the key to your success. All successful people have one thing in common: Positive thinking and passion for what they are doing! Watch the great champions with what will and deprivation are fighting for reaching the desired objective. Watch the successful professionals and try to understand their dedication and sacrifices they do in their effort to reach that point that will bring them professional recognition. All the major successes start from a simple idea and if there is a real desire and positive thinking then they become a reality...!

Many of the ideas may temporarily give us incentives to try them but few of these ideas can keep our desire for success at such high levels in order to be able to overcome the obstacles that are found in the way. Take for example our personal goals and objectives set by each of us for our career, personal life, education, our looks etc. How committed are we to achieve these goals? Do we set objectives but we give up when things are difficult? Are we getting enthusiastic with an idea, which bursts on the road and cannot ever be converted into real objective? How can we keep this enthusiasm and desire for success until we meet our goals?

If the headache pain starts from the area above the eye and then extends in the back of the head, then most probably it is a migraine headache. Contrary to what most people believe, the migraine headache can sometimes be extended across the skull (in 1 / 3 of cases). What is actually a hangover?

Although there is no clear definition, the hangover is the unpleasant feeling that follows a night of excessive alcohol consumption and includes at least two of the following symptoms: headache, nausea, diarrhoea, gastrointestinal disorders, feeling exhausted.

The mechanism that is causing a hangover is not entirely known, but is considered multifactor and is not only related to the quantity of alcohol consumed.

Key causes of a hangover are the reduction of glucose in the blood and dehydration, which is a result of the diuretic action of alcohol. For this reason, the hangover is combined with dry mouth and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

Another important role in the whole process is the consumption of alcohol with an empty stomach, insomnia, and performing physical activity during the drunkenness, as well as the entire state of physical and mental health of the individual.

Some studies argue that children with alcoholic parents are faced with worse hangover symptoms than children of non-alcoholic parents.

Posted on Wednesday, October 08, 2008 :: 2 Comments :: Article Rating :: Motivation, Self Improvement, Psychology

Low self esteem is not only dangerous for your health but it is also bad for your relationship. Self esteem plays a very important role on how you behave in a relationship and if you are suffering from low self esteem then it is more likely that the major cause of problems in your relationship is caused by your low self esteem. Improving your low self esteem will not only benefit your self but it will also do good for your relationships.

The way we feel that other people accept us, plays a crucial role in our interpersonal and social relations. When you are married or in a relationship, these feelings have even greater influence on the quality and evolution of the marital relationship and therefore family life.

When you marry, you promise love and devotion for your entire life both in good and bad moments. But how do we experience these commitments in everyday life? Dow we feel that the other person loves us and accepts us no matter how good is the performance that we have in our professional life?

Understanding what happens to each of us might help us understand how we see others and what we expect from them. So we will be better able to recognize the influence of various negative or positive events in our relationships and to prevent undue complications that occur because of our own experiences and perceptions.

On the contrary high levels of self-esteem strengthens the mental and physical health.

The negative emotions that come with low self-esteem, weaken the body immune system and increase the levels of inflammation. These factors have been associated with heart disease.

The low self-esteem increases stress and leads to unhealthy behaviours such as smoking and alcohol abuse. Not surprisingly this unhealthy combination of low self-esteem and stress also affects social behaviour. In addition people with low self-esteem have no incentive to care for themselves. Instead of exercising and trying to improve their health and improve their self esteem levels they tend to remain inactive and passive.

In the last decade several investigations were made to study the link between good health and self-esteem. A recent research was conducted by the University College London.

Improve your low self esteem

People with low self esteem are unhappy, miserable and they are always full of negative feelings. To improve your self-esteem you have to focus on your own unique abilities and characteristics and also on things that you like. It is not an easy thing to do but low self esteem can be improved and raised to a high level.

We all have our insecurities. At times ourselves disappoint us, we find it difficult to believe in our capabilities, we question our worth and feel small and hopeless, especially when compared to some people who we admire, or that we consider models or simply believe that they represent what we think is of value and importance.

Even people with a high degree of self-confidence and self esteem have moments of self judgment and self denial. These crises are normal and expected. They are part of the human nature, at least as it has shaped in our days. In fact they are necessary for our reorientation process in life: where I am, where I go and what is my relationship with others? But are problematic and painful when they dominate your everyday life: When our every thought is about how incapable we are and how others are better from us.

Causes of low self esteem

The major cause of low self-esteem is the way we think. Our thoughts constantly rotate around the shortcomings, the medical disabilities, our weaknesses, and we lost the scope of our good and strong sides.

Manage Stress with 12 Time Management tips
Posted on Thursday, September 18, 2008 :: 2 Comments :: Article Rating :: Self Improvement, Productivity, Health, Manage Stress, Manage Time

Efficient time management is one of the ways to manage stress in our life. In the world of technology and computers all designed to make our lives easier and add to our free time, day by day we are ultimately more busy than ever! Single or with family responsibilities, we must all find ways to organize and manage our time so that we get little time for our own personal pleasure and relaxation. Our time is our life. The more we are able to plan and manage our time in an effective manner, the more we will be able to enjoy our lives.

But not everyone is having the gift of efficient organization and proper time management. Often many people feel that they are oppressed by the many things they have to do for their family, home or work.

The pressures felt by the unrestrained flow of things we have to do during working hours are increasing and eventually they become intolerable by the additional requirements that currently exist in our personal and family life.

All this creates too much stress and removes the psychological calm that we all need so much today.

Does this mean that we are condemned to the mass of committed work to be done, suffering psychologically and having repercussions on our physical health?

The answer is NO. If we do not have the inherent gift of good organisation and management of time and innumerable obligations of each kind are invading us continuously, it is possible with a methodical effort to learn to apply a few basic principles that will be able to protect us. To manage stress effectively you must first be able to manage your time efficiently.

The benefits of such a successful effort will not only reduce our levels of stress, but will also improve our psychology, mood and satisfaction, and it is a major step towards better physical health. Let us see then how best to approach the issue of proper management and efficient use of our time.

1. Create a to-do list

Initially we can make a list of our daily obligations, or even with the obligations we have to perform in the near future, specifying when and how our obligations will be met. Repetitive obligations can be planned for specific days and times where we have the appropriate time and availability to finish them.

We must never forget that the planning and design of our activities for each day gives us a large degree of control of our time. We must recognize what is important for us and be placed first on our list.

When the treadmill is in operation mind your children or pets not to come close to the moving belt. When not exercising on the treadmill it should be switched off. Do not let the treadmill running if you are not using it, nor for a moment, nor to lift the phone.

3. Do not step on the treadmill belt when it is starting

Always position your feet on both sides (outside the boundaries of the belt) of the treadmill when it is starting. Then step on the moving belt only when you are sure that it is moving in low speed.

12 Ways to efficient home workout
Posted on Tuesday, September 09, 2008 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Self Improvement, Health, Exercise

Home workout can be as affective as exercising at the gym. What you get back from your home workout sessions is what you give in the exercise. This, of course, does not mean that in order to achieve the desired result you should spend countless hours each day exercising. The most important thing is to exercise cleverly.

When exercising at home you should know that not all types of exercise bring the same result. Some exercises are more effective than others; some seek to exercise multiple muscles, some to burning more calories. Regardless what is your goal there are several types of exercises you can do at home and a number of tips to follow to make your home workout more effective.

7 Tips for the effective home workout

1. Exercise with varying intensity

This practice can be implemented in walking as well as in other aerobic exercises and will help you strengthen your physical condition but also it will help you to lose weight faster. It's also very simple to achieve, while walking, for a few minutes increase your speed and start running and after that go back to walking pace again. In aerobics accelerate a little your intensity of exercise and then relax again. These variations in intensity helps the heart to strengthen the pulses, your body to accelerate blood circulation and to oxygenise better, while burning more calories.

Do you speak Body Language?
Posted on Friday, September 05, 2008 :: 3 Comments :: Article Rating :: Motivation, Self Improvement, Psychology

Body language is when you talk to others not with your voice but with your body and gestures. It serves to better understand words since it gives them colour, emotion and meaning. The body language is many times more ... "betraying" as we would like. It also serves to understand if the other person lies, is honest with us and he really believes about us. It is a way to diagnose character, personality, mood and emotions.

Body language starts with the posture, gestures and expressions of your face and movements of your body. Body language is frequently one of the factors that determine the honesty and credibility or not of people. When someone can interpret body language moves and gestures it will be in a better position to understand and handle other people in many aspects of life including relationships, friendships and work.

But how can you improve your body language? To improve your body language you have to first understand and interpet body language expressions nad movements. Most often, the mere avoidance of the most classic mistakes and replacing them by other movements showing more confidence can make the difference.

Body Language Expressions and their meaning

1. Eye contact

The person who avoids direct eye contact when making a presentation or talking to a group of people is a sign that he/she does not have confidence, he is nervous and unprepared. The overwhelming majority of people during a presentation look at their notes, the table in front of them or outside the window.

To improve your body language in this area you should spend more than 90% of the time in your presentation looking at the audience in the eyes. It is useful to video record yourself so as to take notice of how you look when you are targeting an audience in conjunction with the degree of attention the audience gives back to you during the presentation.

Take the example of powerful business leaders who tend to look their audience directly into the eyes when they want to pass a message. Check out some of the presentations by Bill Gates to see how he spoke to people with his body language.

20 Tips on How to Quit Smoking
Posted on Tuesday, September 02, 2008 :: 8 Comments :: Article Rating :: Motivation, Self Improvement, Health

How many times have you given your self the promise that you will quit smoking by tomorrow? To be reading this most probably you are still counting. Usually we make the promise to quit smoking when we are out of breath, when we walk up the stairs, whenever it hurts the neck, whenever we compare the strengths and our physical condition with non-smokers and we find out that we are insufficient, and when we do our New Year resolutions.

To clarify, and to avoid misunderstandings, quitting smoking is a personal choice. No one can convince someone to stop smoking better than him self. This article is not for making an anti-smoking campaign; there is not need for that, everybody around the world knows the harmful effects of smoking. This article is for providing some easy to follow and useful tips that can help someone who decided to quit smoking how to achieve it.

Experts agree that the decision to quit smoking is taken from the smoker when he really feels the desire for change. When the smoker feels threatened by the habit of smoking for both him and the others around him and when he believes that the dematerialisation from nicotine will bring significant benefits to him; and also when he feels capable of coping with change. Simply put, this means that the decision is in our minds and there must be hatched. Any effort influenced by ephemeral modes and prohibitions, if it does not come from our desire is doomed to fail.

So if you have taken your decisions, the following article will guide you on how to quit smoking. If you do not feel confident that you want to quit smoking, you can always keep it for future use.

20 Tips on How to quit smoking

1. Publicise your decision to quit smoking

Let your friends and family know your decision to quit smoking. Get practical support, delegating to a person close to you the difficult task of reminding you of your target and benefits in your health whenever you feel a strong desire for a cigarette. Also, very important, ask from friends and family not to smoke in front of you and not to leave cigarettes around you.

2. Set a target date

15 Ways to Digg your mind for new ideas
Posted on Friday, August 29, 2008 :: 5 Comments :: Article Rating :: Motivation, Self Improvement, Productivity

A good idea is the starting point, the impetus for everything we do. It is the most important success factor for a new project and at the same time the most difficult one.

Creativity is not a special skill, ability or privilege of a few people, but instead is the result of careful and structural thinking.

Digging your mind for new ideas is not an easy thing to do. This article gives you 15 tips and techniques on how to prepare your self and mind for your next big idea.

1. Exercise your mind by reading

Like the body, the mind needs exercise. One way to exercise your mind is to study the ideas and projects of smart people. For example, biographies of successful people are an excellent source of inspiration. Also reading magazines that are considered serious, such as Forbes, Business Week and The Economist, web sites like "Pick the Brain", “Digg” and "Self Growth" is "food for the brain." Reading other ideas, makes it easier to digg your ideas and bring them on the surface.

2. Write your ideas down

It would be a shame to suddenly come up with an excellent idea and after a while to forget it. Do not rely solely on your memory. Keep a notebook, a PDA or a recorder with you in order to capture the idea any time of the day - even besides your bed, in case your inspiration throws you a visit at 2 in the morning.

After you capture your idea, try to use it as soon as possible. Expand your thinking of how this idea can be implemented. What are the good things about this idea, how it can help you improve in an area. These ideas are like fruit: the fresher they are consumed, the better.

3. Discuss your new ideas with others

People have different views, different influences and different cultures, which make their minds work so uniquely. Discussing your ideas with others can help you discover new opportunities to integrate into the idea and ways to expand and enrich it. The discussion may bring something that had not previously gone through your mind, which will broaden your original idea.

Never discard any ideas. Some things that sound silly in the beginning may be simply rough diamonds at the end. Moreover, while discussing try to keep the conversation "open" and non-critical, encourage your friends to use their imagination to the fullest.

11 Reasons why Not use treadmill for running
Posted on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health, Exercise

Treadmill training while providing many benefits , it also presents some disadvantages mainly involving professional runners who are interested in running contests. Let's look in detail what are these disadvantages of treadmill training:

1. Lack of Specialization

For professional runners, treadmill has some drawbacks that are associated with the lack of specialization when runners train for running contests.

There is a general rule about preparing for running contests suggesting that your training environment should be similar to the actual environment you are preparing for. This means that the conditions should be the same. It is obvious that there are significant differences, such as lack of air resistance, lack of diversification of the territory, running on a moving belt as well as biomechanical and psychological differences, between running on the treadmill and running on the track or street.

2. Lack of air resistance

When running on the treadmill, it is obvious that you are in a still condition not running through the air. When running outdoors you crosses the wind, which raises resistance. The quicker you run, the more you feel the resistance of the air over you. On the treadmill, you can simulate air resistance, adjusting the slope by 1-2%.

30 Medical Myth Busters You Must Know
Posted on Friday, August 22, 2008 :: 4 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health

Medical myths are part of our everyday life. Everyone knows them but only a few realise that they are myths and not real:Eating carrots will improve your eyesight. Spinach makes you stronger. Fresh is always better than frozen. Computer screens can damage your eyes. Cholesterol is bad for you health. These are examples of medical and health myths that have been sustained over the years. Many people, including doctors believe in these myths although they are either not true or lack scientific evidence. Some of these myths also have very amazing and unbelievable origins.

The following article presents 30 medical myths you definitely need to know. All myths are busted by research from well-known and established institutions. The myths are separated in the following categories:

  • Food & Drink Medical Myths
  • General Health Medical Myths
  • Eyesight Medical Myths
  • Mobile Phone Related Medical Myths
  • Metabolism Medical Myths

Food & Drink Medical Myths

Myth 1: Carrots can improve your eyesight

This is one of the best medical myths ever. We have been told many times that eating carrots improves our eyesight because they contain a lot of vitamin A. Indeed carrots do contain vitamin A but consuming a lot of vitamin A has nothing to do with improving our vision.

The origins of this myth go back to the dates of World War II. The British Intelligence service spread the rumour that their pilots ate a lot of carrots and that’s why they were so successful in destroying German targets. The truth for their success was the use of radars and not the consumption of huge amounts of carrots!! In an effort to hide the existence of radars the British spread around this myth that is sustained with great success until today.

Myth 2: Eating spinach can make you stronger

I am sure that most of us have seen Popeye getting stronger and more powerful with a tin of spinach. In fact Popeye is the first word that comes to mind when we hear about spinach. The truth about this lovely myth is that spinach does not make you stronger. On the contrary spinach is a vegetable that contains low levels of iron. There are other green vegetables that contain more iron than spinach.

The myth that spinach is a full iron vegetable emerged from a typo mistake made in a report many years ago. In the report spinach was noted to have 34mg of iron (per half tin) but in reality is has only 3.4mg. This typo let people believe that spinach is a full iron vegetable and in addition to the low price of spinach it became very popular.

Another reason that this medical myth lasts for so many years, and will continue to exist for a number of years, is of course Popeye!

15 Proven Tips For The Perfect Power Nap
Posted on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 :: 5 Comments :: Article Rating :: Productivity, Health, Power Nap

Do you know what the Great Napoleon, John Kennedy, Leonardo da Vinci and Churchill had in common? All four-loved power napping, the short sleep shortly after noon.

It is proven that the power nap reduces stress and helps to have a more productive afternoon, whether we are in the middle of the week or during the weekend. At a time when even the list of our obligations grows and the time for a good night sleep is reduced, power nap is a very good way to fill up your batteries.

Power nap does not last long but it invigorates and stimulates our body and spirit, cutting pleasantly the day to two.

The power nap effect is like when a computer makes a SAVE and stores the information, in the same way our brain stores the information obtained until the power nap. So when we wake up from power napping, our memory is clean and our mind is refreshed.

Dog Power Napping Image
Power Nap image by marj_k

The need for a power nap has to do with not only sufficient sleep at night, but also with the load of information we receive. Our brain has the need to rest and stop for a moment the flow of information and this is why we need to 'turn off the switch' during the day.

The signs that notify us that we need sleep are different for each person. Some feel that energy is reduced, others experience memory gaps and others simply cannot keep their eyes open. Whatever your warning alarm the key 'is to sleep a little' - take a power nap, of approximately 20 - 30 minutes so that you do not get in deep sleep (REM). If you sleep more, you run the risk of having difficulties to wake up and when you manage to wake up you will end up with a headache and bad mood.

Every day has just 24 hours - and this applies to all people. Some people are constantly pursuit and pushed by time. This article is about how we can learn to manage our valuable time more effectively.

In reality we cannot manage time, we can only manage ourselves and our relationship with time. After all, how we use (or utilize) our time is largely a matter of habit. And habits are not that easy to change.

To organize and manage our time - and generally our life- we need to clarify what are our objectives, this means we need to identify what to organize and make sure we know where we want to be and be ready to accept the possible 'cost'. In order for us to be able to change how we operate, we first need to 'consider' and understand how we use our time now.

How do you usually spend your time:

  • Interruptions from others (telephone calls - visits)
  • Doing work that should be assigned to others
  • Indecision
  • Lack of adequate information about what you have undertaken to do
  • Unclear priorities
  • Lack of planning
  • Stress and tiredness
  • Inability to say «no»
  • Lack of organization in your surroundings, and that also disrupt you
  • Lack of flexibility - very tight, rigid and unrealistic planning, etc. are some factors that have the ability to swallow your time!

9 Benefits of treadmill training
Posted on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 :: 2 Comments :: Article Rating :: Health, Exercise

If your goal is good health, fitness and weight loss, then running on the treadmill is no disadvantage. When you burn a calorie on the treadmill is the same as a calorie your burn in any other activity. Your cardiovascular ability is improved at the same pace regardless if you are running on the treadmill, outside in the street or in the arena.

9 Benefits of treadmill training

Running into the treadmill has many advantages and benefits such as injury prevention, safety and comfort. In more detail:

1. Running with any weather

Look out of the window of your house. The wind is blowing; rain falls and perhaps turned into snow. You have planned to run for 5 kilometres. Do you dare to pass the threshold of your door and go out with this weather? In such circumstances, a treadmill is the ideal solution. You can make your exercise by running in the comfort and safety your home. The treadmill sets aside the bad weather.

2.Accuracy in pace training

The success of pace training depends on whether running repetitious, in the phases of tension and relaxation, are in precisely predetermined speed and distance.

When you do pace training in the treadmill, you can adjust the speed and thus make sure that throughout the course of recurrence you are running in the same speed. The treadmill does not allow you to slow down or accelerate; it keeps your speed on a steady level. This enforces you to keep the desired pace throughout the training.

3. Steady pace

Once you start getting tired while running you slow down. But you do not realise that you slow down because you feel you have the same intensity and physical effort. In other words, you continue to believe that you are running on your desired pace.
The treadmill will force you to keep the pace you had planned for your training. The only way to slow or reduce your pace is to deliberately reduce the speed of the treadmill.

Have You Seen Your Motivation Today?

By Clark Faint

Alrighty, it's time for another episode of Clark's blog. I've taken a couple of days off to refresh and now I feel ready to write. Sometimes it can be a challenge to come up with a good topic to write about even though this is world is full of things to talk about!

My topic today is motivation. What motivates you to push yourself to accomplish your goals and dreams? If you can't answer that question, you've got some soul-searching to do. Do you ever start off doing something with a full head of steam and charge right out of the gates? You probably even make good progress to start with. Then maybe things slow down to a more stagnant pace and you start to lose some of that enthusiasm and energy you had when you started. It happens to all of us. It even happened to me this week when I thought of writing a couple of days and then decided against it. Instead of going only a week with one blog entry though, I decided it would be better to push myself to write one night even if I didn't want to. Thankfully, tonight I did.
